Sometimes you just need to get away from the madness and immerse yourself in nature. For a quiet camping escape with plenty of creature comforts, head to Bournda National Park, near Bega. It’s located in the heart of the Sapphire Coast and a lot quieter than the national parks near Sydney, especially outside of school holidays.
Bournda National Park is a water lovers paradise, with lakes, lagoons and beaches galore. Hike the challenging Kangarutha walking track (18km return) or simply relax by the water as black swans drift by. When it comes to campgrounds, Hobart Beach campground is one of those rare gems that feels totally secluded but has everything you need – even a laundry.

If you’re craving an affordable break with the family, hit up Murramarang National Park. There’s plenty of coastal rainforest to explore, with towering gums and spectacular white beaches. Go swimming and fishing in summer, or discover whale watching and coastal walks in winter.

Depot Beach cabins are a great base for exploring Murramarang. Each two-bedroom cabin sleeps up to six people and is nestled between the forest and the sea. If your idea of a perfect day starts with a fishing rod and ends with a great catch, make your way to the headland where you’ll find loads of blackfish and drummer. Cook up your fish on one of the gas barbecues, or enjoy pizza night using one of the two pizza ovens available.
Ever dreamed of staying in a historic lighthouse, swimming with seals or watching thousands of little penguins emerge from the ocean at dusk? You can do all this and more on Barunguba Montague Island Nature Reserve, only 12km from Narooma. Visiting this remote and windswept island is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, great for groups.
